The town of Dharamsala, well known for being the place of residence of Dalai Lama, is flocked by tourists all along the year. It is the place which is famous both abroad and also with the domestic tourists. It is a centre of Tibetan and Buddhist culture and is featured prominently on the domestic Buddhist spiritual pilgrimage circuit. How to reach this one of the best
places to visit near Delhi?
For the tourists coming to spend their holidays from abroad, the first landing could either be the Delhi International Airport or the Amritsar International Airport. If you have a close look at the political map of India, you will find that this place is in the State of Himachal Pradesh and it is closer to the state border of Punjab rather than Delhi. Therefore, it is often easier to reach this place from Punjab than from Delhi, especially for tourists that can come to Punjab first than Delhi. However, there is one more transportation option that can be availed. Since the Kangra air strip is the closest to it, Dharamsala can be reached by first going to Kangra and then taking the road and rail route. From Kangra there is a narrow gauge rail link to it. Also, there are a number of taxis and buses plying on the road to take you to this wonderful place.
For the vast majority of domestic tourists, coming to Delhi first is a more suitable option. From Delhi, one can take the domestic flight to land either at Amritsar or Kangra airport. From there, there are a number of buses and taxis which can take you to Dharamsala, one of the best places to visit near Delhi.
However, if you are coming from train and not by air, then the best course to take would be to go to Pathankot first. Although there is a train station at Kangra as well, all trains do not stop here. Pathankot is a major train junction and is only about 85 km from Dharamsala.
Then, of course, if you want to make the most of the holidays with all the travel being done using the road transport, stopping for rejoicing the sights and sounds of the places in between, there is very good road connectivity as well. There are chartered A/c buses plying from all the major cities, like Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Kangra and others, connecting the town. From Delhi, one can reach the Ambala town and from there one can have the option to take either the route to Chandigarh via NH 21 or 21A or to Pathankot via NH 1 and then connect with NH 20 which is the closest highway to Dharamsala.
So, there are a number of transport options for reaching this place. The connectivity via air, rail or road is good with all major close-by cities. So, why not have a feel of the cool weather and see the place of monks this summer.
